Ethical Veganism is the belief or view point that it is morally wrong to exploit non-human animals. Exploitation consists of killing animals for meat, leather and fur, as well as harvesting by-products which can be taken without killing the animal such as milk, eggs and wool.
Vegans do not eat or wear animals. This may seem like a simple concept, but in reality there are numerous factors involved. Every person has a different set of reasons behind their decision to become a vegan.
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." -Mahatma Gandhi
| Animal rights is the driving force behind the vegan movement. Animals are being abused everyday in factory farms, laboratories, and entertainment industries. Factory Farms Livestock such as cows, chickens and pigs are kept in filthy, crowded conditions. Cages and stalls are barely bigger than the animal's body mass, so small that they can't even turn around. Picture cement floors and no windows. Medical attention for injuries or illness is not "wasted" on the disposable creatures, but they are pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones to make them grow bigger and faster than they would naturally. | Animal Testing The conditions in animal research labs are absolutely disturbing. Lab animals are force-fed chemicals, purposely infected with diseases and undergo cruel experimental surgeries. They are kept in cramped, barren cages and given no veterinary care. More on animal testing |
The Environment Veganism is not widely known for its environmental benefits. But the fact is, eating meat is a highly inefficient process. The amounts of resources consumed by farmed animals are grossly disporportional to the amounts of consumable flesh they produce. Trillions of tons of grains and cereals are fed to livestock every year. The livestock also produces waste which has to be disposed of. Demand for farmland has lead to the destruction of rainforests, a process which in itself is a major cause of pollution. More on meat and the environment and Deforestation
Nutrition Eating vegan is good for you. Unfortunately, most people find it hard to believe that it's possible for humans to live on an entirely plant-based diet, let alone thrive on one. Meat is the traditionally accepted source of protein, but it's also full of saturated fats. Beans, nuts and whole grains are high protein foods, plus they're also full of healthy fiber. Milk is credited for its calcium content, but you can also get pleanty of calcium from dark green, leafy vegetables such as broccoli and kale. The most important part of vegan nutrition is a widely varied diet. More on vegan nutrition and a Vegan food pyramid
