Turn it off! Any light, any appliance, any computer screen. If you're not using it, don't leave it on and let it waste energy. This will also lower your electricity bill.
Walk, Bike, Carpool. Whenever possible, avoid burning excess fossil fuels. If your destination is close, walk or ride your bike. If it's not, share rides with friends. Try to get the most out of each trip by running several errands at once, and waiting to get things until you're going out anyway. Don't make a single trip for just one item (unless you're really desperate).
Don't waste water! There are pleanty of ways to conserve water in your day to day life. - Don't leave the sink running, for no reason. Whether you're brushing your teeth, doing dishes, or rinsing vegetables, temporarily turn the water off whenever possible. - Check out these special shower head attachments for saving water (and money) while you shower. Just turn off the water flow when you don't need it.
Speaking of water... Try to avoid using hot water whenever possible. This will save energy used to heat water, as well as save you money on your utility bill. - Wash your clothes and dishes in cold water whenever possible, there are special detergents for exactly this purpose. - Try taking cool or luke-warm showers and baths (which is less damaging for your skin and hair anyway).
Bring your own bag. When shopping, bring reusable cloth tote bags to carry your stuff in and reduce waste (those plastic grocery bags end up in landfills).
Recycle. If you don't already, sign up for recyclable pick-up in your neighborhood.
Pass it on. Share books, magazines, movies, CD's and other media. Borrow things from your friends instead of buying them new. If you're finished with something, find someone who can use it. Visit Freecycle.org.
CFL's are smart. CFL's (compact fluorescnet light bulbs) are way more efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs. They last years longer, they produce less heat, they save energy and money. Get some. |
